What is the International Philosophy Olympiad about?
It goes without saying that doing well and receiving a prize in the International Philosophy Olympiad would be a fantastic boost to your student profile if you are aiming for a humanities major, especially anything related to philosophy. It would certainly put you way ahead of most other applicants!
What work is involved?
You will need to be registered to participate in the IPO by the IPO delegate in the country you are based. You can find the full list of country representatives on the IPO website.
You will then write an essay on one of the four topics available. You can write in English, German, Spanish or French, as long as the language you choose is not the official language of the region where you are based. You will have 4 hours and the only aid you can use during this time is a dictionary.
Your work will be assessed based on the following criteria:
relevance to the topic,
philosophical understanding of the topic,
persuasive power of argumentation,
coherence and
originality.
Am I eligible?
High school students under the age of 20 are eligible to enter the IPO.
When can I apply?
The IPO registration typically happens in February, with the essay writing happening shortly after.

Philosophy reading list: an experienced Ariton consultant with prepare a reading list for you to ensure you have the essential basis necessary for making a logically consistent and sound arguments in your essay.
Expert writing technique training: Ariton mentors have extensive academic writing experience. We will work with you closely on developing your skillset and level up your writing before you attempt the IPO.
Practice essays: you will write several essays in IPO conditions, and receive extensive feedback from your Ariton mentor. Your performance will be used to design a personalized strategy for you to prepare for the IPO.
Project management: there is a lot of work involved in preparing for the International Philosophy Olympiad, and it will be your Ariton mentor's priority to ensure you are on track.
