AMC / AIME
The Math Olympiad for the very best mathematics wizards
What is AMC?
AMC is a Mathematics competition that acts as a qualifying exam for AIME.
Students who do well in AIME are invited to participate in the International Math Olympiad.
AMC is a multiple-choice question exam. There are 4 possible answers to each question. You will have 75min to answer 25 questions. The material does not go beyond the high-school curriculum, but questions can be "tricky" and require a lot of practice to do well under the limited time conditions.
There are 2 levels of the AMC: AMC 10 for students up to 10 grade (and 17.5 years of age), and AMC 12 which is typically taken by 12 graders.
What is AIME?
AIME is the stage 2 of the qualifying exams for the International Math Olympiad.
AIME consists of 15 questions, that the participants have 3 hours to answer. Answer to each question is an integer between 0 and 999, so guessing the right answer is very unlikely.
The questions on AIME are much more challenging than AMC, and participants should be prepared to spend a lot of time preparing. One key to passing AIME is finding the right mentor to work with you as you prepare.
Top-scoring participants of AIME will be invited to take part in the USAMO (USA Mathematical Olympiad).
How do I prepare?
It is important to find the right mentor to help you prepare by prioritzing areas that you are not doing well in and motivates you to push yourself to the best of your ability and performance. Taking past paper exams is where you can start preparing.
When can I apply for AMC?
Up-to-date application dates for AMC 10/12 are listed on the AMC website. The competition takes part in November, and the earliest "early bird" applications open in August.
Note that international students in non-US schools need to participate in the AMC through one of the International Group Leaders in their region.
When can I apply for AIME?
You cannot "apply" to AIME, as you can only take AIME if you do well in AMC. Students who achieve a score of 100 or more out of a total 150, as well as top 5% scorers are invited. AIME will take place in February 2024, but it is a good idea to check the AIME website for latest updates.
